PE

“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort.” Jesse Owens

Intent

At All Saints’ Church of England Primary School, we intend to instil a lifelong love of sport and physical activity in all children irrespective of academic or physical ability. We believe that PE plays a crucial role in building children’s confidence and self-esteem by encouraging life skills including leadership and teamwork, and provides the foundations for lasting positive physical and mental wellbeing.
Our PE curriculum enables children to develop their knowledge and skills across a range of physical activities including: ball games; team games; gymnastics; dance; orienteering and swimming. Within each lesson, children will receive explicit instruction and clear modelling, building on prior learning, so that they are motivated to perform a range of physical activities. Children are taught the importance of preparing for physical activity by warming up through stretching and starting slowly to prevent injury.  In addition, we will seek to develop the children’s independence in order to know when to apply a range of tactics, rules and strategies.

We have designed our PE curriculum to enable children to develop their knowledge and skills across a broad range of physical activities from EYFS to Upper Key Stage 2. Fundamentals, ball skills and sending and receiving are isolated in KS1 so children can apply them to in games activities, with increased pressure, rules and decision-making. As children progress to Key Stage 2, children receive a broad range of experiences, including activities they may not easily access outside school such as outdoor adventurous activities. In addition, we prepare children for secondary school PE, teaching activities even further and preparing them for Key Stage 3 by increasing confidence in the sports our link schools teach. It is also our intention to ensure that every child has access to at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity. This may be through active playtimes and active learning as well as distinct PE lessons.

Additionally, the school offers a range of after-school clubs to further enhance the children’s learning in this area as well as to provide opportunities to experience additional or unusual sports.

Implementation

To provide the children of All Saints’ Primary School with the opportunity to fully access and be challenged by the PE curriculum, the PE curriculum lead will ensure that learning outcomes across all year groups adhere to the National Curriculum and Early Years framework. The children will experience two weekly PE lessons across Key Stage 1 & 2. Through using the Get Set 4 PE scheme, children will develop their PE skills throughout half termly set plans, covering both indoor and outdoor PE skills. Teachers will use the scheme to assess the progression of skills documents on a weekly basis, monitoring children’s ability within the lesson. In order for PE skills to be taught correctly, teachers are receiving on-going CPD for PE with a specific focus on how to teach fundamental movements.

Early Years Foundation Stage - Pupils should be taught to:

  • Revise and refine the fundamental movement skills they have already acquired: rolling, crawling, walking, jumping, running, hopping, skipping and climbing.
  • Progress towards a more fluent style of moving, with developing control and grace.
Develop overall body-strength, balance, coordination and agility  - needed to engage successfully with future physical education sessions and other physical disciplines, including dance, gymnastics, sport and swimming.
  • Use their core muscle strength to achieve a good posture, not only during P.E. lessons but also when sitting at a table or sitting on the floor.
  • Combine different movements with easy and fluency.
  • Confidently and safely use a range of large and small apparatus indoors and outdoors, alone and in a group.

Develop overall body strength, core strength, balance, coordination and agility.

Key Stage 1 - Pupils should be taught to:

  • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and coordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.
  • Participate in team games. Developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Key Stage 2 - Pupils should be taught to:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination.
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns.
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their best.

Swimming and water safety - Pupils should be taught to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke].
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Impact

Each unit that All Saints’ deliver in PE is mapped and assessed against the key strands of the school’s progression map to ensure that children develop detailed knowledge and skills across the entire breadth of the PE curriculum through engaging and age-appropriate curriculum content. Teachers track children’s progress across these strands to obtain a summative assessment at the end of each academic year. This data is then used by the subject leader to monitor and evaluate PE to support teaching and learning across the school.

PE displays will show a range of opportunities where children have explored sports coaching further. Not only will this show our participation in the SOKE Cluster Sports Partnership but also by experiencing one of many after-school clubs. All Saints’ offers children the opportunity to apply the skills they have learnt within these and during PE lessons within competitive competitions. If children show an interest or ability in a specific area of sport, school will attempt to signpost them to a local club so they have the opportunity to pursue their interest or talent further.

The curriculum leader will celebrate the success of pupils across all year groups and monitor standards to ensure the outcomes in PE are at expected levels. Furthermore, they will provide ongoing CPD support to ensure that the curriculum’s impact is wide reaching and positive.
